Last fall, we lost our beloved teacher and colleague Bev Maszdzen. Since 1991, Bev, a speech pathologist, worked with students and supported staff in many of our special education classrooms and schools. Most recently, she was part of our Maywood team where, according to the tribute written by her family, she fought “hard and passionately” for the kids – always “doing right by them.” Those of us who knew Bev know how true this is. At Maywood, Bev was an invaluable member of Maywood’s Mindfulness Committee. Not only did she coordinate Maywood’s annual Mindfulness Fair, she brought mindfulness practices into each school day.
Losing Bev too soon has left a void for many of us. We miss her kindness, sense of humor, mastery of sarcasm and laughter. As a tribute, our Maywood school community recently came together to plant a Mindfulness Garden. Beautiful, colorful flowers and whimsical items are a part of the outdoor space at the school where we can remember Bev and take some time to breathe and be—just like she taught us!
